Good Afternoon EA Sports Representative!
First off, I'd like to introduce my self appropriately. I am Robert Marchetti, and I am a huge hockey and NHL fan. I've been playing hockey ever since I was 3 or 4 years old skating on the pond behind my house. That being said, I'd like to think that I have a decent amount of knowledge on the sport of hockey. I attempted to find an email point of contact on the EA Sports online website, but unfortunately it was to no avail. So I am hoping that this message reaches someone in regards to the gameplay in NHL 14! It is a great game that brings my friends and I together from all across the country. Most of us have a military background, so its another way to keep in touch with each other. Which in turn keeps us as close friends, so thank you for that!
That being said, I am in no way attempting to bash the company or the game itself. I only seek to improve the game so that way it is more enjoyable for those who know how to play hockey. I understand that the video game developing process is not easy. I have no knowledge of the subject myself. I can't imagine the hours of hard work and determination that go into recreating the actual feel of being on the ice. I must say that at this point, EA Sports has done a very good job of recreating the experience. However, there are definitely quite a few areas in the game that my friends and I believe need to be improved. So I'll attempt to list a few things that we have noticed over the multiple hours that we have put into the game, and hopefully they go into consideration for future products.
EASHL is usually where we spend most of our time, however we all feel that these subjects can be used for an all around game improvement. So for the first subject, which is a huge portion of the game, the computer AI. I believe the game is close to recreating an artificial experience on ice. However, sometimes the AI seem too oblivious to various situations, For example, open passes, playing aggressive defense, shooting out of the blue. These are a few of the reasons why we believe the AI may need a bit of the revamp. Along with that, the computer Goalie. More so on EASHL, the goalies seem to be ignorant of a lot of plays. They don't comprehend the same shots that are being taken 90% of the game. Along with that their positioning is way off. I understand their overall statistics are lower on EASHL, but I'd rather have two unbeatable goalies on each team rather than the opposing team scoring with the same shot from the top of the face off circle every play.
Going more into overall statistics, it is frustrating when an opposing team has a lower overall average and still continues to play against us (and actual crush us) with ease. Again, this sort of ties in with computer AI not comprehending the same shots over and over and the goalie allowing these same shots time and time again. Its almost as if sometimes the games are so one sided. It just varies on if we get a "lucky defenseman" or a "lucky goalie". Which is a shame to rely on when a player on our team can't cover a large portion of the ice that they are supposed to. Basically, it aggravates the team when we get blown out by an undeveloped team.
Now I don't want anyone to think that we are degrading the skills of another player. Like I said I have been playing hockey since I was young, and I like to think that I can tell the difference between someone who knows the game, and someone who doesn't know the game. This leads me into another issue, the lack of fundamental hockey in the game. This is where the realization between a real hockey game and a video game becomes most noticeable. The lack of skill that is used to score and make plays is a little absurd. The game is supposed to replicate how players play in the professional leagues. Which brings me to my second half of this subject, the ability to play defense. I think it is a skill that has been seriously overlooked and essentially downgraded in the game. To a point where a majority of the time all you can do is draw a penalty to stop the play. I don't think its okay that a player can (in a professional game) be able to hang at the blue line, call a pass from their computer and score on the completely oblivious goalie. What I am trying to say is exactly what I said before, if this is supposed to replicate an actual hockey game, it shouldn't feel like I am just playing a video game where if you sit in the perfect spot and shoot, you will beat the goaltender every single time.
So lastly, I'd like to say that I am sorry if anyone has taken any offense to this message. It is solely for the benefit of the game, and not to bash its developers and creators. Like I said, I can't imagine the time and creativity that it takes to create such a life-like game. It must be difficult to make it as professional as it has progressed throughout the years.
I just really hope that the end state of this message is to reach out to someone and understand the point of view of a player who loves the game of hockey and would love to see the game progress beyond any of its competitors. Your game is really an enjoyment to me and my friends, and we can't thank you enough for the ability to play such a realistic game. I will attempt to send this message to as many customer support representatives that I can. Thank you for your time and effort on everything that you do. It is much appreciated from your fan base!
Last but not least...... GO RANGERS!!!!!
